Manchester United U18s beat Southampton 3-0 - Official...

13/04/2013 13:00, Report by Nick Coppack A Sam Byrne brace helped Manchester United's Under-18s to a victory over Southampton on Saturday. Byrne netted twice in the 2nd half after Andreas Pereira gave the young Reds the lead on 19 minutes following great work by Byrne. Southampton went to the game three things clear of Paul McGuinness' part in the Barclays Premier League Under-18s Group 2 table and beat United 4-2 just last month. But at a Trafford Training Centre, they were no match for a solid United area. Byrne was the star and it was his picture, adhering to a wonderful piece of skill, that proved too hot for the Southampton goalkeeper to handle on 19 minutes. Pereira tapped in the rebound to send the Reds 1-0 up. The visitors started the next half menacingly but United's counter-attacking play was also creating difficulties and on 64 minutes Byrne netted with a good header at the near post from Jack Barmby's cross. The Dubliner capped a fine performance and completed the rating with 12 minutes to play when he cut inside off the remaining touchline and curled a sensational effort to the top spot. Victory takes United above Southampton and in to minute area, by means of an excellent goal huge difference. The young Reds' next check comes in the form of Everton on Wednesday 17 April (11:00 BST). United: Gollini; Love, Evans (Ioannou 46), McNair, Grimshaw; Pearson, Weir (Daehli 25), Rudge, Byrne; Pereira, Barmby (Wilson 65)
