Ohio State Basketball: 5 Biggest Lessons from Buckeyes' 2012-13 Season

No matter how you slice the 2012-13 Ohio State basketball season, the ending was sorely disappointing for a squad that was a considerable favorite to land in its second consecutive Final Four.

The loss to Wichita State was one of the worst shooting performances in a season that included a handful of brick-laid clunkers, and it came at the most inopportune time.

However, that doesn't mean the entire season was a failure. The Buckeyes finished second in the toughest conference in America and capped off a long winning streak to end the schedule with a Big Ten tournament title.

It didn't take a trip to the Elite Eight to prove that Thad Matta has built a basketball powerhouse in Columbus, but the fact that he took an offensively challenged squad that far is impressive.

After the Buckeyes' tournament run, Ohio State is now the only school in the country that has played in the past four Sweet 16s. What's more, Matta added his fourth Big Ten tournament title in the past seven years to his resume. No other conference school has won more than one since he took over the program.

Deshaun Thomas' inclusion on the First Team All-Big Ten (and Aaron Craft's spot on the coaches' squad) marked the eighth straight season that Matta has had a player honored in such a way. The second-longest current streak in the conference stands at one year.

Throw on top of the on-court success the fact that Ohio State is currently in the process of building a top-notch basketball-only practice facility thanks to Matta's efforts and that a loaded recruiting class is on the horizon (class of 2014), and it is clear that it is no longer a football school.

In today's SportsCenter-driven, 140-character culture, it is the alley-oops and flashy three-point shooting that often draws the headlines and the attention of the fans.

The Buckeyes appeared dead in the water after a disappointing start to Big Ten play left them with an 8-5 conference record that included two blowout losses. That's when Thad Matta turned his focus to defense and started allocating the minutes accordingly.

Shannon Scott began to steal the lion's share of Lenzelle Smith's minutes, and he and Aaron Craft combined to form the most dynamic defensive duo of guards in the entire Big Ten and arguably the nation. Each was rewarded with a spot on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and completely altered the trajectory of the entire second half of the season.

Craft averaged 2.1 steals a game, Scott swiped 1.7 a night and the rest of the defense followed suit. An Elite Eight appearance and Big Ten tournament title was the eventual result.

There was exactly one player on Ohio State's 2012-13 roster who shot better than 40 percent from behind the three-point arc this season, and he was sixth on the team in three-point field-goal attempts per night.

A major contributing factor for Ohio State's early season woes was the lack of effective three-point shooting. The Buckeyes were lacking a knock-down, reliable weapon from behind the arc, which meant opponents could crowd the lane on defense and stifle the Scarlet and Gray's offense.

The late-season winning streak wasn't the result of much better shooting, but Thad Matta's squad was able to mix in timely baskets with its suffocating defense. However, the season-long shooting struggles all culminated in the Elite Eight loss to Wichita State.

Ohio State shot a putrid 5-of-25 from downtown, which was its ultimate undoing in a game that didn't feature a lot of turnovers. In college basketball, it is difficult to overcome poor shooting no matter how well the defense plays.

It may seem like common sense to say that relying on one player in a game of five versus five is not an efficient way to play offense, but that was an issue Ohio State faced for much of the year.

A season wrap-up article featured on elevenwarriors.com did an excellent job of analyzing Ohio State's offensive issues throughout the early conference schedule (which ultimately reared their ugly head again in the Elite Eight loss to Wichita State).

The Buckeyes started conference play 8-5 and finished the season on a 12-game winning streak. They shot nearly five less free throws a game during the 8-5 start than in the final 12 contests, turned it over more than three times more a night during the rough start and averaged nearly two fewer assists during the early struggles.

Much of those numbers can be attributed to the fact that Ohio State was relying almost solely on Deshaun Thomas during the first half of the season. When the ball movement increased during the winning streak, the assists (obviously) picked up, the free-throw attempts increased and there were simply less frustrating losses.

Unfortunately for the Buckeye fans, the reliance on Thomas returned in the Elite Eight loss. He was a mere 7-of-19 from the field, which certainly didn't help the cause.

The most important lesson learned this season by Ohio State may be the fact that next season could be special. This year was kind of a baptism by fire after the losses of Jared Sullinger and William Buford, as Thad Matta mixed and matched various lineup combinations until he finally settled on the defensive-oriented group that served as the catalyst for the late-season charge.

The question of Deshaun Thomas' return will dominate the early offseason storylines, but even if he takes his talents to the NBA ,the foundation is in place for the Buckeyes to have a special year. Matta will know to utilize the Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott combination more frequently, and the development of the younger players will key next season's efforts.

Specifically, LaQuinton Ross and Sam Thompson looked like completely different offensive players in the second half of the Big Ten season. If they continue to develop over the course of an entire offseason (something that often happens between the sophomore and junior seasons), the Buckeyes should be much more formidable on offense.

Throw in stretch forward Marc Loving and sharp-shooting Kameron Williams (who should help with the three-point woes), and Ohio State will be deep and talented. Aaron Craft will serve as the senior leader and maybe even Amir Williams will improve as he enters the realms of the upperclassmen.

Touch upon Nike VR_S Secret Visit Driver Evaluation by SeeMoreGuy

Advancement and Buzz What do those words mean to golfers when it involves choosing our next driver?A One means a lot a' innovation.A The other, buzz, doesnat mean a great deal if you ask me personally, but it can be extremely essential to maneuver merchandise in the ultra-competitive business of selling golf clubs.AA Innovation and buzz are two words that immediately spring to mind when I do believe of Nike Golf products and services and that has never been more true than early in the 2013 year. Nike Golf is still very young in comparison with a number of the other long-in-the-tooth equipment businesses fighting for spots within our tennis bags.A A very important factor they've never been afraid to accomplish is think away from field. A couple of years ago they certainly were among the first significant OEMs to drop a driver on the market.A The technicians over at Nike are at it again, this time with the first ever cavity right back driver in their new Covert and Covert Tour driver for 2013. Buzz doesnat help square up the club face at impact, or does it improve basketball speed, but it does move product.A The buzz via Nike Golf is at an high early in 2013, with the large statement of the Rory McIlroy signing giving Nike the very best 2 people in the world.A Throw in the actual fact that Rory has the brand-new Covert driver in his bag and that just enhances the buzz of this club.A Will that buzz lead to an improved driver for consumers?A Letas find out. Secret Described From dictionary.com the definition of the word covert: concealed; secret; disguised.A That is just the case with the Covert driver from Nike as well.A By simply considering the driver from address you've no idea what's going on.A Turn the club around and that is where all is exposed, but as youall see, there's much more going on with the Covert driver than the hole back. With a warm region thatas 45 percent larger, NexCOR creates more velocity at impact with a variable experience depth that moves the lovely place highera'from the heel of the team to the guts higha'where people are most likely to create impact. Looks, Sound and Feel I consider these features to be very subjective and difficult to examine because what might look, feel and appear good in my experience might not do something for the next guy.A So far as Iam worried, Nike nailed it with the look of the Covert Tour.A From target all you could see is a nice deep red top with perhaps the most famous logo in the world, the Nike Swoosh, towards the rear.A There's a minimum alignment arrow in the form of the word Covert in black.A The red and black colors make up most of the sole of the team as well.A The black face gives solution to more black in the idea of the base before the Mitsubishi Kuro Kage combines into some dull graphics and disappears into the black grip.A The 430cc Covert Tour features a conventional pear shaped head that draws together certainly one of the better looking people on the market for 2013. Sound is something that often gets raised when discussing Nike drivers, probably because the noise of these Sasquatch distinct drivers were oftentimes the most universally despised in history.A I actually enjoy that driver, but the sounda.not so much.A The folks at Nike first got it right with the Covert nevertheless. After seeing the hole right back, I instantly estimated that metal baseball bat sound, but was pleasantly surprised with more of a desirable thud. It still looks great.A Shots hit directly on the sweet spot create the best sound and it's something which I discovered very addicting as my testing was continued by me, although just a little higher pitched. Feel is directly linked to the sound for me personally and I discovered that to be correct with the Covert as well. A good shot was hit by you and you get both a sound and feel back from the driver.A One of my very first pictures was caught large and very much toward the heel of the membership. As youad expect, the sound and feel was harsh.A Over all though, you obtain a great feel when you find it right in the middle and the feeling is just like any driver Iave used. Performance I am impressed with the performance of the Covert Tour.A Really, for me the club begins performing before I even begin my swing.A This is basically because it sets up so perfectly behind the ball that it quickly gives me the confidence that I will certainly hit a good shot.A It looks like the tendency recently has visited push high launch/low spin drivers and thatas probably fine for the most of golfers.A Personally, I do not like launching my devices that high, so Iam pleased to see that with the Covert itas not a launching driver.A I routinely hit mid release images that shot to popularity quickly and the roll out will be excellent when the ball strikes the floor on the lessons I usually perform. Numbers smart on the introduction monitor my figures look very solid with the Covert Tour.A Numbers were taken from a 10 shot average. I did most of my testing with the loft set to 10.5 degrees, but did change it for the objective of testing. I discovered that my preferred setting was in reality 10.5 degrees, which is a degree to a and a higher than I an average of play.A The higher loft setting of the Covert didn't result in sky high drives like I expected.A Changing the loft and experience angle on the Covert is easy to do and does not get a guide or an app to find it out.A Every thing is described on the hosel and you can change settings in a matter of moments. This is my first experience with a Kuro Kage shaft and I've to say that I really loved it.A I think it mixes with this team head perfectly to deliver a great experience driver that you may confidently pursue shots without any problem of the shaft not having the capability to hold up.A I can feel the shaft delivering energy through the ball at impact and with strong consistency and great feel as well. I think this pairing is definitely a successful combination for Nike. General My first response to seeing press on the Covert driver was a mixed.A I wasnat crazy about the search of the cavity and I felt like they were trying to offer an excessive amount of adjustability with the different loft and experience angle settings.A Iam content to say that in person the looks of the Covert, and especially the Covert Tour model I tested, are a better than what I initially expected.A In fact, from address there are few drivers that can hold a to it in the looks department so far as Iam concerned. The adjustability is excellent, but how much is too much is what I keep asking myself here.A With 3 different encounter angles and 5 different loft settings I canat help but think itas a little overboard.A I personally have experienced countless flexible individuals that once my go-to startup was found I never changed the settings again.A I canat hold this from the club though. Itas more of a problem with the way the whole driver market seems to be going today than such a thing. The Nike Covert Tour is really a driver that gets noticed. During testing I'd numerous people ask about the club.A and appear to me it had been seen by them on TV and they were fascinated, so that extends back to that hype point again. The news is definitely there for Nike with the Covert line.A Everyone has seen it and everyone seems intrigued.A I think that everyone on the market for a driver in 2013 could be doing themselves a major injustice by not examining the Covert out.A The Covert Tour is available now for a cost of $399. PGA SHOW 2013 – “THE PUTTER BOOTHS!”

After 15 consecutive years attending the PGA Show…nothing and I mean nothing amongst the million square feet of show floor space still gets me as excited as the area in that back left corner of the exhibit.  When I walk through those doors the first place I go is still the same…the putter booths.

More than anything I just love putters.  But year after year you begin to admire more than just the newest designs displayed amongst the exhibitors booths. Start spending time with the guys in the putter industry and you quickly realize that these guys aren't cut from the same cloth as all the others.  Of course everyone is passionate about their product across the show room floor…but these guys…literally have puddles beneath their aching feet filled with the blood, sweat, tears and metal shavings that have gone in to their designs.

It's made up of guys from all walks of life.  And this year was no different.  You had everything from an industry vet like a Bobby Grace to a 20-something law student trying to break in the industry. The putter world doesn't discriminate, not matter what your background, a putter guy always feels like he is just one napkin drawing away from the next big thing.

But after walking up and down the isles of the my favorite part of the show I have to admit I was left feeling like something was different in 2013, something had changed from years past.  I doubled back through one more time just to make sure.  And it was more than obvious my initial feelings were correct.  Not only were their less putter companies exhibiting at this years show, but the booths were also dramatically cut down in size and the super high-end custom stuff (aka: Putter Porn) I had come to love seeing so much at the PGA Shows was almost entirely missing.  Yes, their were a few pieces of one-off eye candy on display but for the most part this year was nothing more than the production stuff many of you guys had already seen.

Now, I know I just got done saying there wasn't much eye candy on display by the putter guys at the 2013 PGA Show, but Scotty Cameron is always the exception.  Between his cases on display at the Titleist booth and the Table Rock exhibit for the Scotty collectors he always brings it to the show for everyone to see.  And this year was no different…only problem was if you didn't get to the Table Rock booth quick enough there wasn't much to see, it gets gobbled up quick.

And for all those Scotty haters out there, if you can spend just one second being objective you can't help but marvel at what this guy has and still continues to create.  Put yourself around the putter industry long enough and you are guaranteed to walk away impressed.  The man was/is/and continues to be at the top of his game.

Probably the biggest mover and shaker at the show this year in the putter section was RIFE.  We covered their first set of newly released putters a couple weeks ago and told you there was much more for RIFE fans to look forward to…and they didn't disappoint.  Between their Apple like booth set-up and fresh new designs they definitely had a very productive show.  We also caught a glimpse of something to look forward to in the near future from the brand…lots of custom stuff sounds like it is coming down the pipeline.  And also some technology I have felt is much needed in the driver category but actually might first be seen in a couple new RIFE putters.  But we will just have to wait and see….

It was just a couple years ago that Piretti was the new guy on the putter block at the PGA Show. In that time many brands have come and gone but Piretti has become a staple not only at the show but also on many of the tours.  If your looking for a smaller brand that I think has officially made it in the industry and will be around for quite some time in the putter world, Piretti is definitely that brand.

If you've been a golfer for any amount of time, Bobby Grace is more than likely a name you not only recognize but might also have had in your bag at one time or another.  The man has done it all in the putter game.  He has gone from designing on his own to being behind some of the biggest names in golf and now back to designing for himself.  And from my conversations with him he couldn't be happier.  Though his booth might have been smaller and not as much custom stuff was on display, this years show might have been his biggest success yet.

Remember that guy I was talking about…the 20-something law student trying to break in to the industry…well that's the guys behind the KRONOS putter brand.  If you happen to be a fan of the boutique putter brands that keep it simple, clean and vintage then KRONOS might be your brand.

The original Axis 1 putter design has won more than its share of awards…everything from "MyGolfSpy's Most Innovative Product in 2009″ to "Sports Illustrated – Best In Show". And while the design looks similar they continue to refine the construction and blueprint behind its success.  Hard to imagine but they are working on a more traditional design with similar functionality for those golfers that just cannot bring themselves to game one of these designs.  And for those that haven't I still suggest you give one a shot.  They might look strange, but so did the PING Anser when it first got released.  And this one might be even more effective.

One thing you can bank on at the PGA Show is a busy SeeMore putter booth.  These guys have a loyal following and for good reason.  For those that believe in the RST tech it is hard to ever go back to something else.  Their customer service is also one of the best in the business.  So what's new from SeeMore?  Well, more RST tech in a couple new designs that's what.  And while the SeeMore RST technology can been kind of limiting regarding the design possibilites for the SeeMore brand, they definitely have some things in the works to change that on the horizon.  So be on the look out for what they have up their sleeves.

Remember the ProFound brand?  Well, it looks like they are trying to make a comeback.  If you forgot about their putters and the theory behind the brand, it's all about, "Hide The Orange".  They have a new website, new owner and lower pricing on their putters.  For the European Spies out there, you might remember they had quite a stable of pros gaming these back in 2006.  We will just have to wait and see if they can make it back in '13.

Haven't seen something wacky enough for your taste buds yet?  Well, hopefully this will wet your whistle.  It's called the MxV1 Putter from MXV Golf and it is one of the more intriguing putters you will see.  So what's the deal with this page peeler of a putter?  It's all about what they call Center Strike Technology™.

Simply put (depending on how well you know executive desk toys from the 70′s), based on Newton's Cradle (the popular executive desk toy that adorned many a corporate office in the 70′s), by striking a golf ball with a putter of equal diameter, you essentially hit a ball with a ball. Naturally, you'll strike the center of gravity with less error as the club glides to its target in a steady flow of energy (momentum, hence MxV).  Got it?  Good.  Will surely make for an interesting MyGolfSpy Labs from the looks of this thing.

Is Arizona Cardinals' Safety Adrian Wilson Hall of Fame Worthy?

Adrian Wilson has been a staple of the Arizona Cardinals defense since he was drafted in Round 3 of the 2001 NFL draft. But is he a Hall of Fame candidate when he finally retires?

He is the Cardinals' franchise record-holder with 25.5 sacks by a safety. No one else is remotely close—Leonard Smith recorded 11 from 1983-88.

Wilson also holds the NFL record for sacks by a safety in a single season. He notched eight in 2005 to break former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson's record of seven, set in 1986.

With 5.5 more sacks, Wilson will become the NFL's sack king for safeties—Rodney Harrison recorded 30.5 from 1994-08.

The 12-year pro also needs 41 total tackles to become Arizona's all-time leading tackler. His 892 are third behind Ronald McKinnon's 930 (1996-04) and Eric Hill's 932 (1989-97).

Last season, Wilson became the sixth player in NFL history to record 25 sacks and 25 interceptions for a career, joining Harrison, William Thomas, Ray Lewis, Brian Dawkins and Ronde Barber.

Though the on-field accomplishments of last season were a milestone of which he can be proud, Wilson was subjected to less playing time because former defensive coordinator Ray Horton felt a different base package was necessary to keep his defense competitive.

New defensive coordinator Todd Bowles would be wise to keep Wilson on the field as much as possible in 2013, and instead of using him to cover receivers—as was the case much of the time under Horton—Bowles must drop Wilson back into the box where he did most of his damage as a young up-and-coming safety.

He made his name stepping up into the box to help with the run game, covering tight ends man-to-man and providing zone coverage in the flat. Allowing him to play within his wheelhouse once more before he rides off into the desert sunset would benefit both parties greatly.

Wilson needs 4.5 sacks and three interceptions to become just the third player in league history to record 30 sacks and 30 interceptions for a career.

Whether Wilson has the ability to finish out the remaining three seasons of his contract remains to be seen, but if he does, he should join Harrison and Lewis in the 30/30 club. Even two good seasons can get him there.

To put into perspective what kind of career Wilson has had, look at the chart below that shows how other safeties from the 2001 draft class performed throughout their careers. Note that Wilson was not even the Cardinals' first strong safety selected.

That's right. Michael Stone out of Memphis University was taken 10 picks ahead of Wilson by Arizona. The Cardinals traded future Hall of Fame defensive back Aeneas Williams to the St. Louis Rams for the No. 54 and No. 123 picks in 2001.

Arizona took Stone's Memphis teammate, defensive tackle Marcus Bell, with the fourth-rounder they received from the Rams. He played six seasons in the NFL for the Cardinals and Detroit Lions, recording 6.5 sacks, 168 total tackles and forced three fumbles during his career.

But does that make him worthy of the Hall of Fame? Of the nine safeties enshrined in Canton—Jack Christiansen, Ken Houston, Paul Krouse, Yale Lary, Ronnie Lott, Mel Renfro, Emlen Tunnell, Larry Wilson, Willie Wood and Rod Woodson—only three are without an NFL championship (Houston, Krouse and Wilson).

Adrian's career compares well to the men already there. Though his interception total is off the pace (Christiansen's 46 INTs are the fewest among the HOF bunch), he has been every bit as impactful to his team. And he plays a different kind of safety than those mentioned above.

He is not the drop-into-coverage type. We all watched him prove that the past two seasons with Horton running the Cardinals' defense. He is a down-in-the-box run-stuffer, a punishing tackler with enough range to cover the flat well and play the outside deep third when needed.

His career numbers are a virtual match to Dawkins, a presumed future Hall of Famer. The final chart to the right compares Wilson to Dawkins over their careers.

And Dawkins played until he was 38 years old. If Wilson were to play four more seasons and match Dawkins' years of NFL service, he would retire at 37. Does he have it in him?

Playing as hard and as violently as he does, that may be difficult to do. But if he believes he can do it, he should be taken at his word.

Wichita State upsets OSU 70-66 for Final Four trip

Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points, Fred Van Vleet bounced in a big basket with 1 minute left, and ninth-seeded Wichita State earned its first trip to the Final Four since 1965 with a 70-66 victory over Ohio State on Saturday.

Van Vleet scored 12 points as the Shockers (30-8) followed up last week's win over top-ranked Gonzaga with a nail-biting victory over the second-seeded Buckeyes (29-8), whose 11-game winning streak ended one game short of their second straight Final Four.

Wichita State roared to a 20-point lead with 11 minutes to play after Ohio State played an awful first half, but LaQuinton Ross scored 15 of his 19 points after halftime, leading a ferocious rally to within three points in the final minutes.

But after Tekele Cotton hit a 3-pointer with 2:20 left, VanVleet scored on a shot that bounced all over the rim before dropping. Ron Baker and Cotton hit last-minute free throws to secure the second Final Four trip in Wichita State's history.

Wichita State is just the fifth team seeded ninth or higher to reach the Final Four since seeding began in 1979, but the second in three years following 11th-seeded VCU's improbable run in 2011.

The Shockers are also the kings of Kansas, reaching the national semifinals after the powerful Jayhawks and Kansas State both went down.

Deshaun Thomas scored 21 points after missing nine of his first 12 shots for the Buckeyes, who made just 24 percent of their first-half shots. Aaron Craft scored nine points on 2-for-12 shooting for the Buckeyes, who dug a hole too deep to escape with their second-half rally.

But after two weeks of upsets in the wild West bracket, underdog Wichita State was an appropriate choice to cut down Staples Center's nets. The Shockers' well-balanced roster managed built that enormous lead with the same consummate team play that they've shown throughout the tournament.

Two sections packed with cheering Shockers fans provided all the encouragement necessary for a team that didn't win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and was thought to be a bubble team for an NCAA berth. Now, Wichita State is the MVC's first Final Four team since Larry Bird led Indiana State to the title game in 1979.

Another giant awaits the Shockers in Atlanta next weekend: They'll face the winner of Sunday's Midwest Regional final between Duke and Louisville.

Robin van Persie: The difference between EPL’s first and second

Robin van Persie's switch from Arsenal to Manchester United in the summer raised some eyebrows, aggravated the Gunners' faithful and adding another string to Sir Alex Ferguson's attacking bow.

Questions were asked whether the Dutchman could play alongside Wayne Rooney, however with the English forward facing time out of form and on the sidelines, van Persie has taken up the mantle as the Red Devils' main man.

With United four points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table with a game in hand, it looks like van Persie's acquisition has been the difference between the cross-town rivals.

van Persie's initial stats after 23 league games are impressive. The 29-year-old has hit the back of the net 18 times so far, with important goals in big games securing invaluable points for the Old Trafford outfit. van Persie has a 53% shooting accuracy, higher than Liverpool's Luis Suarez (47%), the league's second-highest scorer.

Looking at the goals van Persie has scored shows that this season could have been very different without the Dutch maestro's intervention. van Persie hit the back of the net with his first shot for the club, in a 3-2 win over Fulham.

After losing 1-0 to Everton in their first fixture of the season, it was pivotal that United got back on track, and van Persie's strike cancelled out Damien Duff's opener on the road to victory.

van Persie's first hat-trick for the club came in the side's next game, with a triple for the Dutchman against Southampton at St Mary's. The last minute winner headed home by van Persie turned one point into three, and firmly announced his arrival in a United shirt.

Another winner, this time at Anfield and from the penalty spot, turned possible dropped points into a valuable win against old enemies Liverpool.

van Persie has went on to hit the back of the net against title rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, and scored the solitary goal of the game against West Ham.

From there the winner in a seven-goal thriller against Reading and a season-defining free-kick against Manchester City in the derby shaped the first half of the campaign. van Persie's last-ditch effort at the Etihad Stadium gave United a real boost after relinquishing a two-goal lead, whilst also keeping Roberto Mancini's men at arm's length in the points tally.

van Persie has gone on to score against Sunderland, Newcastle, West Brom, Wigan, Liverpool once more and Tottenham. Despite the crucial winners mentioned above, van Persie has also scored the first goal nine times this term, with only Demba Ba getting the opener for his team in the Premier League more times.

Wayne Rooney is usually the man to link the Red Devils' midfield and attack, but van Persie's link-up play must also be accredited for United place at the top of the table. The ex-Arsenal man has offered up six assists, and has excellent possession stats. 519 accurate attacking zone passes shows this; van Persie has also only been dispossessed anywhere on the pitch 45 times.

All-in-all, Robin van Persie has proved himself this season as one of the most clinical and talented all-round strikers not only in the Premier League but world football. The Old Trafford faithful, and Sir Alex Ferguson, must be mightily thankful that the marksman chose to move to United and not City, or the Premier League table may look decidedly different.

Soccerlens are currently running a competition to win a Robin van Persie Manchester United shirt. Simply answer a couple of questions about the Red Devils here to stand a chance of winning the replica jersey.

Man United Plot Move to Sign Borussia Dortmund Pair This Summer ...

Man United continue to track Borussia Dortmund pair Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski according to the Daily Express.

Having brought in Shinji Kagawa from the Bundesliga side last summer Sir Alex Ferguson may feel he has a decent chance of luring other stars from Jurgen Klopp's squad, a process that is perhaps helped by the fact that the Westfalenstadion side are set to lose their domestic league crown to Bayern Munich.

Ferguson may see 24 year old German international Hummels as a long term successor to either Rio Ferdinand or injury prone Nemanja Vidic but the Scot will have to fight off interest from Barcelona, who are also interested in the rock solid centre-back.

The Man United boss also continues to be strongly linked with interest in 24 year old Pole Lewandowski, who may well be on his way this summer as by the end of the current campaign the prolific forward will have just a year to run on his Dortmund contract.

Though his side are set to lose their grip on their Bundesliga title this hasn't prevented the former Lech Poznan man continuing to impress up front.

Lewandowski has followed on from his 30 goal haul last term with 25 goals in all competitions this term and is the Bundesliga's top scorer.

One would imagine interest in the powerful forward would only be relevant if Ferguson were to lose one of his current striking options, with perhaps Javier Hernandez the most likely to consider an Old Trafford exit given that the Mexican is still struggling to retain a spot in Ferguson's first team despite scoring regularly when called upon.

Villa skipper Vlaar, who believes Suarez is one of the best he has faced, says he is losing his reputation as a diver — though the Uruguayan appeared to throw a punch at Chile's Gonzalo Jara in midweek.

But centre-half Vlaar, 28, who faced former Ajax star Suarez when he played for Feyenoord, believes the Premier League's leading scorer has cleaned up his act.

"He's a very good player, very strong. He's always in the right spot, and the way he dribbles with the ball is great."

Villa are looking for a third successive victory and Vlaar added: "If you win games that's where it all starts for confidence."

Czech starlet eyes Baggies loan - Clubcall

West Bromwich Albion, Last updated: 19:06, March 27, 2013[[views]] Premiership, West Bromwich Albion https://plus.google.com/115899669055204909525 Vitesse Arnhem defender Tomas Kalas says West Brom may be the great stepping stone for him on his way to making the quality at Chelsea. The 19-year-old Czech opponent is on loan at the Eredivisie team from Stamford Bridge, but was observed by Baggies manager Steve Clarke earlier this month and is understood to be available for a loan at still another Premier League side.Kalas can play at right back and in the centre of support - which makes him a fascinating solution for the Baggies - who have a good relationship with Chelsea."I am not really the best player of Vitesse, how can I dream of Chelsea?" Kalas told Voetbal International. "You should come to your own membership degree, go above and then look further."However, Kalas does not be prepared to be right back at Arnhem to perform next season."I nevertheless have an intermediate stage. Somewhere at the very best of Germany or France, or at a club in England. Somewhere like Stuttgart, Wolfsburg, Olympique Marseille, but also West Bromwich Albion. That could be ideal. The move from Vitesse to Chelsea is too big."Chelsea signed Kalas from Sigma Olomouc in 2010 for A600,000 - an enormous amount for a 17-year-old who had made only a handful of senior appearances, but he played often in the part that reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2011 prior to going out on loan last season. He won the Talent of the Year prize at the Czech basketball prizes in February. < Previous article Next article >

Newcastle United announce latest financial accounts - ChronicleLive

Overall profit was recorded at £1.4m following player amortisation which has seen Newcastle re-enter the world's top 20 revenue-generating clubs after increasing turnover to £93.3m – representing a 5.4% increase on last year.

A fifth-place finish in the league saw TV income swell by 14.6% with the squad set to benefit from an agreement on broadcasting for next year.

As a result of these initiatives the club saw a hugely significant increase in the number of season ticket holders and members.

Commercial revenue fell by 12.7%, though the latest figures do not include income from the club's new partnership deal with Wonga.

That partnership, which is effective from the 2013/14 season, represents a significant increase on the club's previous commercial agreements.

A key factor is an increase in the club's wage bill, which has risen by 20% to £64.1m following the signings of a number of key players, including Cabaye, Marveaux, Santon, Ba and Cisse.

Forget Arsenal and join Man City! £20m-rated Jovetic urged to move by team ... - Daily Mail

Manchester City flop Stefan Savic has urged his Montenegro and Fiorentina team-mate Stevan Jovetic to make a summer switch to the Etihad Stadium.

The 23-year-old forward is one of Europe's hottest properties and Arsenal are thought to be leading the race for the £20million-rated man.

But Savic, who spent a season on the fringes of the City first-team last campaign before moving to Serie A, has told his friend to move to Manchester.

'They are a rising team, one of the best clubs in Europe. They will win trophies and be in the Champions League every year.'

Savic, 22, says he has no regrets over leaving City for Fiorentina in search of first-team football, but he feels his countryman will fare better than he did at the Etihad Stadium.

He added: 'It was hard for me there because I came straight from the Serbian league. I won a league title but knew I had to play regularly to improve, so I left — it was my decision.

'It is different for Stevan. He has five years' experience and could play straight away with Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez.'

Premier League Elite To Battle It Out For Birmingham City Youngster ...

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are preparing for a summer battle to sign Birmingham City youngster Koby Arthur according to The Mirror.

Arthur is tipped for a bright future in the game, and the 17 year old could find himself fast-tracked into the Birmingham first team for their up-coming game with Crystal Palace.

The player has yet to sign a professional deal with the club though and his availability is being monitored by a host of top Premier League clubs.

Arsenal, Chelsea and City are all ready to jump in and tempt the player away from Birmingham and should Arthur agree, the Championship side would be powerless to prevent the player from leaving.

The club would be due compensation through a tribunal but it is unlikely to match the figure the club would likely be able to seek for the Ghanaian wonderkid on the transfer market.

Birmingham discovered Arthur playing in the lower leagues and immediately offered him a place in their Community Trust football development and education programme. The youngster quickly impressed the Birmingham coaches and soon found his way into the club's full reserve squad.

The player was handed a first team squad number last month, and Arthur's meteoric rise could be set to continue with a place on the sub's bench in Friday's game at Selhurst Park.

Illusion Baseball: Six Hitters With Hidden Price

Slay the weight with a deluxe, complete draft set and complete regular time insurance as well! Register now and gain complete usage of the full Fantasy player database, player ranks for many platforms and a lot more. Marketing has abused the term value for way too long that it has become something we dismiss when we see it. Price used to mean you were getting something more for your hard-earned dollar, but since the Madison Avenue crowd made it their siren call to draw your attention to whatever it was they were pitching that day, weave become numbed to the term. We study it in every Sunday newspaper flier, see it on every store window and get hammered with it on television and radio thousands of times every year. Real value is becoming lost in an sea of buzzwords made to make us dig deep into our pockets and spend our money. In reality, value is hard to find. In Fantasy Baseball, valuea..real value, can there be for many to see. Nevertheless, if you only look at the research that subject in Fantasy Baseball a' home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases and batting average a' you will not get the values you seek. You have to check further to the figures, to a playeras skills that are defined by the metrics. Improvements in skill metrics are the correct predictors of value in regards to baseball players and the Fantasy game. There are no tricks here; itas right there in plain sight knowing where to check, and thatas where weare planning right now a in search of the reaching prices to be had on draft day in your Fantasy category. Thereas no key sauce to this; in some instances itas increased walk (increasing BB%) and strikeout rates (reducing K%) or an increase in remote power (ISO), in others, another half mathematical spike or developments in a variety of hit region identification and swing measurements. A potential future value can be predicted by improvement in any combination of these skill metrics observed within the context of a playeras statistical history. Letas be clear with this a' hitter value in the context of Fantasy Baseball ensures that a player can outperform their draft position. In this instance, weare searching for their draft position could be potentially outperformed by hitters who with a significant amount; in some instances, weare speaking about possible first round benefit. Given that you know what weare looking for and where weare looking for it, letas see which hitters you should consider importance picks for the 2013 Fantasy Baseball season. Shin-Soo Choo (OF, CIN) a' This Year's and 2010 seasons put Choo on the chart as a Fantasy pressure, as he published a pair of 20/20 seasons with a batting average, On Base Percentages of.394 and.401 respectively along with exemplary checking stats. Simply speaking, he was among the best, however underrated outfielders in the Fantasy game. Then an injury-plagued 2011 disappointed everyone else expecting still another 20/20 period or simply better, specially provided Chooas double-digit walk charges. The good thing is that his skills remained intact all through his incomplete comeback period in 2012, with exception of a small dip in his fly ball rate (27.1-percent FB%) below his 32.3-percent career mark and a corresponding upsurge in groundball rate (49.7-percent GB%) up from a 45.7-percent career mark. The decline in fly balls restricted his home run output to just 16 round-trippers, but his speed was as great as ever, with 21 stolen bases at around exactly the same success rate as 2010. Now that heall be plying his art in the HR-friendly confines of the Fantastic American Ballpark, we ought to see a rise in homers this year. Because the Reds have indicated that Choo is penciled directly into be their leadoff batter, a nice bump should be also seen by us in steals and he should have a good shot at 100-plus runs scored. That kind of production will allow him to outperform his recent ADP of #78 general (according to NFBC ADP information) with a good shot at catapulting him to the Top-15 outfielders this year. Alex Gordon (OF, KC) a' Gordon was a really seriously hyped prospect and rookie who disappointed several along with his slow development after having a fairly strong debut in 2007. In fact, it wasnat until 2011 that Gordon ultimately silenced his critics and put up the type of numbers that were predicted of him:.303/.376/.502 with 23 HRs, 87 RBIs, 101 Runs and 17 stolen bases. Unfortuitously, he took a step in 2012, with less energy (14 HRs) and less bargains (10 SBs), but largely the same ability measurements. He struck dramatically less fly balls, as his FB% slipped not quite six percentage points. Fortuitously, the loss in travel balls triggered more line devices (LD% rose to 25 percent, a lifetime career high) and just several extra floor balls (GB% rose just 3.2 percentage points over 2011 to 42.3%). He had a fairly unlucky fly ball to home work price (HR/FB%) of 8.5-percent, that has been well below the 12.5-percent he submitted in 2011. Gordon had a very good second half last time in comparison to his first half numbers. Eight of his 14 HRs came throughout the second half, his Isolated Power (ISO) increased 45 items to.184, and his HR/FB price skied from 5.7-percent to a much more regular 11.7-percent. Once a skill is displayed by a player, they display it again at any time and could possess it because of their job. So it is reasonable to think that Gordon can at least approach, if maybe not exceed his 2011 generation again, especially if heas moved into one of the more traditional power slots in the lineup from last seasonas the top of order position. Gordonas ADP is currently at #88 overall, but his expertise suggests he's capable of setting up at least a 20/20 time with a average north of.300. Gordon is 29 years old and still in his primary years as a major leaguer, so itas not unreasonable to believe he has still another gear, particularly given how late he bloomed as a player. I do believe the potential is there for him to become a Top-10 outfielder and possibly reunite 2nd in 2010 to round price. David Murphy (OF, TEX) a Iave been on the David Murphy camp since long ago in his days as a possibility in debt Sox program. All heas done over the last five periods is improve almost every year and post double-digit HRs and steals despite being platooned or having to count on different playeras accidents to get involved with the selection. Fortuitously for Murphy, he plays on a team that included Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz and Craig Gentry a three of the most injury-prone people in the game. Still, it wasnat until 2012 that Murphy ultimately received over 500 plate appearances, and even then it was just 512. He responded with a offensive time, and he did it with an increased walk rate (10.6-percent), increased ISO to.175 and his most useful OBP (.380) ever with the Rangers. Since Hamilton is finished, the Rangers will more than likely make Murphy their daily remaining fielder, giving his first genuine shot to him at 600-plus PA. Heall have to do better at reaching left-handed selling, particularly because heas had so little experience against them over the last five periods (585 PA,.266 BA). However, even if he does challenge against lefties, heall significantly more than make up for any faults along with his work against righties, against whom he has always hit well. At the very least, a 20/20 season is achievable plus a batting average right around his career.285 mark. That undoubtedly causes it to be likely that he outperforms his absurd ADP of #253. Nolan Reimold (OF/DH, BAL) a Reimold has appeared on my individual record for days gone by three seasons after a promising 2009 in which he socked 15 HRs while setting up a.279/.365/.466 point in 411 PA. Unfortuitously, he hasnat come close to that type of creation in just about any year since because of lack of playing time or injury. Last season, he managed just 16 games before succumbing to neck pain, which resulted in the necessity for spinal fusion surgery (similar to what Peyton Manning had). Reimold features a very solid skill set presenting elite walk prices (9.7 BB%), stable power (.194 ISO) and excellent hit region skills. As a platoon customer in left field with Nate McLouth he enters 2013, nobodyas concept of competition for Reimold. If he can make up anywhere near where he left off last season, Reimold may drive the Orioles to locate extra at bats for him, perhaps in the DH position currently filled by Wilson Betemit, nobodyas concept of competition for anyone. If they can get hot, stay hot and stay healthy, Reimold is capable of double-digit HRs and reliable counting stats along with a batting average of.275 or better given his expertise. His #345 ADP position suggests heas largely going undrafted in mixed leagues of significantly less than 14-16 groups, so he's someone it is possible to grab at the conclusion of one's draft and hide away. Exactly what do possibly fail with taking a chance on a new player who can become your Fantasy teamas smartest choice as a or fifth outfielder or better? Kendrys Morales (1B/DH, SEA) a' I have to admit that including Morales on this record is more a function of hunch than anything else. In fact, his talent metrics regressed really throughout the board in 2012. He struck out more often, walked less often, chased pitches out of the sector at the greatest rate of his profession, and he swung and missed more often than in the past. Enhance that his proceed to Safeco Field, one of the parks for players in every of baseball and you must be thinking that I am out of my head. Perhaps I'm, but Morales had a 2nd half last time. Actually, he looked a bit like the Morales who once raked his solution to a ISO in his best time a' 2009. After a reasonable first half, where he batted.289 with ten HRs and a pure.142 ISO, Morales made it on in the 2nd half, bashing 14 homers and notching a.248 ISO. He went a little more while maintaining his strikeout price level, and the primary reason his batting average dropped to.256 was because of an unfortunate BABIP of.281, well below his career.305 mark. Remember, Morales missed all of 2011 and most of 2010, so it could have been miraculous to see him reunite with all of his skills intact after this type of long layoff. Now that he's another full year of strength building and skill practice behind him, Morales should be willing to lose and soar again in 2013. Itas also worth noting that the walls have now been moved in and lowered at Safeco, which will only support Morales in the HR department. Iam betting he simply outproduces his #132 ADP, with the potential to return to Top-40 player manufacturing. Jordan Cuddyer (OF, COL) a' By most accounts, Cuddyeras injury-riddled first period in Colorado was a dud. Certainly, an indirect harm all but destroyed his second half, and he looked terrible in the 19 second half activities he did play. Nevertheless, Cuddyer had a fairly strong first half, batting.264 (still above league average) with 50 RBI, 12 HRs, 44 Runs and 8 SBs in 81 games. Challenge that over the full time and Cuddyer would have had one of is own best ever. His.216 ISO over the first half might have been among his best seasons, and he did end up with a.229 ISO for the season despite his poor second half. He's entering the 2013 period at age 34, so we could be seeing the beginning of his decline phase. But when there's one ballpark where in fact the aging curve can be offset by park elements, itas Coloradoas Coors Field; therefore donat count Cuddyer out just yet. A totally healthier year can quickly see him post 25 HRs, 100 RBIas 80 Runs scored and double-digit bargains (although they are minimal likely of the bunch), that may positively defeat Cuddyeras #166 ADP by a very profitable margin. suggestions, remarks and questions are welcome anytime at tim.m@rotoexperts.com. Manchester City Full-Back Pablo Zabaleta Believes Gareth Bale To ...

Manchester City star Pablo Zabaleta has revealed who he believes to be the best player in the Premier League according to Sky Sports.

And despite the defender finding the likes of Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva in his company at the Manchester City, it is not someone you will find in the Etihad dressing room.

Zabaleta has revealed that he believes Tottenham's Gareth Bale to be the Premier League's outstanding performer this season.

Bale has been in scintillating form this term, netting an impressive 21 goals in 36 appearances on the Tottenham left-wing. His goals have given Andre Villas-Boas' men a reach chance of securing Champions League qualification and the club know they face a battle to hang on to this signature come the end of the season.

The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are all thought to be monitoring the player's availability but Spurs have offered Bale a new £150,000 a week deal in the hopes of persuading the player to stay at White Hart Lane for another season.

Bale's decision may rest on whether the club secure a top four finish. Tottenham are currently four points clear of Arsenal but the Gunners can reduce the deficit to just one point should they win their game in hand.

Dwight Howard Vs. David Lee: Who Ya Got?

During the Golden State Warriors' victory over the Los Angeles Lakers last night, Dwight Howard and David Lee got into a bit of a tiff. There was an elbow and a Dwight Howard bloody lip and three (!) stitches, and then post-game huffing and vows of mild mannered revenge. Friendship is only a matter of time.

This is nothing new for Lee, who is somewhat of a prickly instigator himself – he got into it with Roy Hibbert and also not-so-accidentally decked LeBron earlier this year. None of it ever amounted to a reputation or serious fisticuffs – the NBA is a non-contact league, after all – and so we thought we'd preview the fight that won't be: Dwight Howard vs. David Lee.

The Raiders’ Jared Veldheer Gives LaRon Landry A Run For His Money In The Inhuman Body” Department

Remember last year when those photos of an insanely muscular – even by NFL standards – LaRon Landry came out? How awed we all were, even after controlling for post-gym muscle inflation? Well, we might just have 2013′s answer to Landry. His name: Jared Veldheer. It's possible you'd never heard of the Raiders tackle, who's started all 32 of his team's games over the last two seasons. It's pretty much impossible, though, that you'll forget him once you've seen him. Because Veldheer looks like this now:

While once again we must allow that from the looks of things, Vedheer had just been working out, which makes one's muscles look bigger than they would in a default state… let's just say that if, for example, I just got finished working out, my arms wouldn't look like that. Nor would most other humans', for that matter. Impressive work sculpting that physique, Jared. The Raiders franchise might be a vortex of lost hope and 4-12 records… but it's a damn muscular one.

BracketRacket: Dickie V and sharks, oh my!

Welcome back again to BracketRacket, the one-stop shopping place for all your NCAA needs. Today's edition includes a social networking segment, a touching moment between opponents and just a little dance called the Larranaga Shuffle. Oh, and we have got Dickie V and his new competitor, dolphins. Not the Dolphins, just dolphins. Dumb SOCIAL MEDIA SEGMENT The advent of social networking has added to the NCAA tournament experience, allowing fans to review before, throughout and after every game, creating a supplementary excitement to March Madness. But may social media have an effect on the games? The answer is, maybe. Using an protocol it calls "Prime Buzz," the digital marketing organization Prime Visibility tracked the first two models of the NCAA tournament to see if the excitement created on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking stations shown how the clubs did on the court. Put simply, do clubs with the greater number of buzz get more games? It appears so. After tracking social media interactions from 24-hours before the start of games until the end of games in the first round, Prime Visibility found as did 11 of 16 in the 2nd round, that 25 of the 32 groups with increased hype won. The team that produced probably the most buzz was Florida Gulf Coast University, the very first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16, and the best was Northwestern State, which did not allow it to be out from the first round. The highest discrepancy between teams was FGCU's 95.48 percent to 4.52 percent for San Diego State. Read the class here: http://bit.ly/16dYAEf And PRESSING MINUTE In the times after Florida Gulf Coast shoved off Hillcrest State to attain the Sweet 16, the floor was not raced off by Aztecs guard Jamaal Franklin. Rather, he tracked down FGCU's Sherwood Brown to provide him congratulations in just one of the weekend's more heartfelt minutes. Franklin hugged Brown as he kept speaking as he gave some words to him of encouragement, tapped him on the chest and hugged again before separating. Here is as soon as http://goo.gl/ZJrc4 and what Franklin had to say about any of it after: "I just told him just keep being the best choice that he's, make sure the ball is in his arms, make sure he does what he's to accomplish to keep his team rolling," Franklin said during Hillcrest State's postgame news conference. "And just make certain they remain together because those men we played against today are just like us, they all love one another and they all play together. They only want to win. And you can see at the conclusion of the overall game, a lot of teams win games and only leave the court, but they accepted it. They embraced it together, not only one another." Dumb THE NEWS The day after Florida Gulf Coast's victory over Hillcrest State to reach NCAA tournament's Sweet 16, the News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla., ran a large image of the 15th-seeded Eagles celebrating with the headline: "SWEET 15!" Turns out, sweet was a typical theme in lots of statements on Monday a at least for groups that won a' as you will see in this url from Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard showing selected front pages from round the country: http://bit.ly/13q4FzT Fox Sports also exposed this headline: OMFG-CU! And no, it's not text-speak for some thing crass. It means Oh My, Texas Gulf Coast University! And DOIN' THE LARRANAGA His players were asked by miami coach Jim Larranaga to be fighters and they came through, clinching a spot in the Sweet 16. After they did, Larranaga recognized by his or her own version of the Muhammad Ali Shuffle, something we have dubbed "The Larranaga Shuffle." See his moves in this clip: http://bit.ly/10bC4Yz And more Hurricanes video, of elderly Justin Gamble taking down a video bomb: http://bit.ly/XChjE2 And DICKIE V versus. SHARKS ESPN analyst Dick Vitale did a lot of trash speaking with some dolphins as he picked against them in a class problem. http://bit.ly/YDgv1Q OKAY, we all know it's TELEVISION schtick, part of a campaign with Allstate. Still, Dickie V must be looking over his shoulder now. The sharks, from Atlanta's Georgia Aquarium, have selected 30 activities correctly in this what is-going-to-happen-next contest, just one behind Vitale. Among the dolphins' gets were Wichita State over top-seeded Gonzaga, Florida Gulf Coast over Georgetown and La Salle over Kansas State. To be honest, Vitale is in better shape for the rest of the bracket. He has Louisville beating Indiana in the name game while the sharks' Final Four groups have all been removed. Dumb Statistic OF YOUR DAY You're bracket might be busted, but you are still watching. Reviews for the NCAA tournament will be the highest in 15 years and up 27 percent from a year ago. The broadcasts on CBC, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged a house rating and 12 share, the best rating for the tournament's first week since 1998. The rating was 5.9 and 15 share, that year. The broadcasts also had the highest viewership since 1993, averaging 8.9 million whole readers a' a 9 per cent increase from a year before. Dumb OFFER OF YOUR DAY "Well, I'm glad I am 62 instead of 42 today. I think I will speak for all your commissioners a' this is something that I do not think anybody enjoy. But we respond is going to impact some other person, and, look, it's been going on all the method to just about all the leagues. Kompany: Manchester City must learn from this season - Yahoo! Sports

In stark contrast to the closely-run title race that was sealed by Sergio Aguero on the last day of last season, Sir Alex Ferguson's side holds a commanding 15-point lead over City with just eight games of the campaign left to play.

With Kompany reduced to just 20 league appearances after time spent sidelined through injury, he has admitted that the team simply hasn't been good enough this season under manager Roberto Mancini's guidance.

"You always want to go for the titles and you always want to go for the top," Kompany told Sky Sports. "I've experienced it in the same way as every other player. I've wanted our team to do well.

"We still have a good run in the FA Cup, but ultimately in football you have to have a winner and a loser, so I think we will learn from what happened there and we'll grow stronger again."

The Manchester derby takes place at Old Trafford shortly after the end of the international break and Kompany has targeted a return to first-team action with his club, providing he comes through Belgium's fixture list unscathed.

"I feel great, I feel really good," he said. "I've put in some hard work over the eight last weeks and I'm just very happy to be back with the team. Yes it's frustrating but it's something you have to deal with as a professional football player.

"I've been through a lot worse than this, so for me it was just a case of working really hard and making sure that I was able to be there for the team again. My only ambition was to make myself available again for the manager of the national team, for the manager of Manchester City, and I've worked really hard."

Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye believes club and country stresses sparked ... - Scottish Daily Record

THE FRENCHMAN has said that an intense year of club and country commitments left him drained and battling with the illness.

NEWCASTLE United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has revealed how he overcame a battle with depression brought on by the rigorous schedule he followed, playing for both club and country, last year.

The Frenchman said he was "reassured" by reading books by Jonny Wilkinson and Rafael Nadal, who had both been through similar experiences.

Cabaye joined the Magpies in 2011 and ended his impressive first season by joining up with his national squad for Euro 2012, but the non-stop season took its toll.

Cabaye said that only a groin injury which sidelined him for much of the current campaign gave him time to recuperate and recover from his illness.

"But I was reassured by reading the books of Jonny Wilkinson and Rafael Nadal, who both talked about the same thing. They talked about post-competition depression and the need to have a break.

"I started with Newcastle in June 2012 and for the very first time, I didn't have any winter break so then to resume in July 2012, it was very difficult.

"Maybe it is difficult to start again after a big competition such as the Euros, but my body didn't allow me to do what I wanted to do."

Cabaye explained how his groin injury and resulting surgery allowed him to go home to Lille and spend time with friends. It was that overdue period away from the game that helped nurse him back to full health.

"I wnt to give twice as much to save the club from the drop. I want to prove to the fans that they can trust me and I can defend the Newcastle colours.

Heat set to hit the road riding 26-game win streak

MIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade's only on-court contribution of the night was grabbing a microphone for LeBron James' postgame interview. Chris Bosh was twice regaled by "Happy Birthday" singing from fans. Juwan Howard got his first minutes of the season.

A much bigger test — a four-game trip that could bring them to the cusp of catching the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers — starts on Monday.

James finished with 32 points on 11 for 14 shooting, 10 assists and eight rebounds, Bosh scored 15 points and the Heat won their 26th straight game, topping the Charlotte Bobcats 109-77 on Sunday night.

The chance for No. 27 comes Monday against Orlando, a team that has taken the Heat to the limit twice already this season.

"It's an opportunity just to treat it as a business trip," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "That's what we talked about. This is a business trip. Let's take care of (Monday) night. It's not about the story line. It's not about anything else."

Norris Cole scored 15 points and Ray Allen added 14 for the Heat, who played without Wade, held from the lineup because of right knee soreness the team believes is minor. And after yet another slow start, Miami is now seven victories shy of matching those Lakers of Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich — and a reserve named Pat Riley — for the NBA record.

"We have to continue to play well on the road," said Bosh, who turned 29 Sunday. "We have some huge challenges ahead of us. A lot of places where you can't just come in and mosey in and think you're going to win the game."

For the fourth straight game, Miami got into a double-digit deficit. Charlotte led by 11 in the early going and was within five in the third quarter, but two huge spurts by the Heat were more than enough to put the game away.

Kemba Walker led Charlotte with 20 points, and Gerald Henderson had 18. Charlotte finished the night 5 for 25 from 3-point range, while the Heat was 13 for 30 beyond the arc.

"We ran into some dry spells and we settled for way too many 3's," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said. "At the end of the game we had 25 and that's not who we are."

According to STATS, Miami became the seventh team in the last decade to trail a game by double figures and win by at least 32 points.

James departed with about 8 minutes left, after perhaps the highlight of the night. Chris Andersen blocked a layup try by Walker, doing so with such force that the ball caromed right back into play and basically started a Miami fast break on its own. James capped the sequence with a spectacular dunk, his final points of the night.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic clapped and smiled. Golf's Rory McIlroy — who could lose his No. 1 ranking if Tiger Woods holds on and wins at Bay Hill on Monday — turned toward Heat owner Micky Arison and grinned. World heavyweight boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko's facial expression was one of disbelief.

"I think it's very humbling that you can have some of the greats from other sports come to see your team play, come to see you play," James said. "You try to leave an impression on them, as a team and as an individual, absolutely. So it was great to have them in the building, for sure."

The Bobcats and Heat played three times during 2012, and Charlotte never led for a single second in any of those contests. The Bobcats did lead by five when the teams played in Miami this past Feb. 4, but hadn't held a double-digit lead over the Heat since December 2011.

Just like Boston, Cleveland and Detroit did before them in the past week, the Bobcats were able to get the early jump on Miami. Charlotte hit eight of its first 14 shots, grabbed a speedy 19-8 lead and had Spoelstra calling a quick timeout.

"That's kind of been their M.O. lately, they've gotten off to slow starts," Henderson said. "We wanted to come out and jump on them just like the other teams have. Once they got settled in, starting making plays, they got back into the game and we also when on a long drought where we couldn't score the ball."

Miami closed the first quarter on a 15-0 run, taking the lead back on a 60-foot alley-oop from Cole to James, who pointed to the rim and then found a way to catch the long pass from the second-year guard. By the time the Heat's burst was over, an 11-point deficit turned into a 39-25 lead — making it a 31-6 swing for Miami, which forced the Bobcats into missing 20 of 22 shots during that stretch.

NOTES: Play was briefly delayed in the third quarter because of some power-outage issues involving the scoreboard and game clock. ... The Bobcats needed a police escort to get to the arena from their hotel, since that particular section of downtown Miami also had a large crowd of people clogging streets for an outdoor electronic music festival. ... Heat F Juwan Howard was in uniform, his first time on an active roster since Game 5 of last season's NBA Finals, and played the final three-plus minutes for the debut appearance of his 19th season. He made his only shot.

What Occurred Last Night: Texas Gulf Coast Shocks Georgetown, Manhunter Salle Upsets Kansas State

Yes, like thereas any chance Iam not just planning to write about March Madness today. Yesterday evening up to some NBA things did happen (Miami keeps moving, Lakers drop to freaking Washington), itas March Madness, child (A Dick Vitale). And because it is March Madness, needless to say there have been two large upsets to get this event started. Allen Iverson isnat walking during that door. Neither are aZo, Ewing, Dikembe, and on occasion even Jahidi White. No. 2-ranked Georgetown became just the seventh no. 2 seed to get rid of to a no. 15 seed Friday as Florida Gulf Coast stunned the Hoyas with a 78-68 victory to advance to the next round of the NCAA tournament. FGC pads Sherwood Brown and Bernard Thompson combined for 47 points to cause the Eaglesa offensive attack that saw that shoot 44 free throws to Georgetownas 20. FGC also kept the Hoyas to just.375 shooting from the floor on the way to success. Georgetown was led by Markel Starks with 23 points in defeat. Oh, also, there was this monster alley-oop to put the exclamation point on the Eaglesa big upset. Check out the entire shows via NCAA.com: It absolutely was a tale of two halves. La Salle dominated the first half, Kansas State dominated the second half, but the lower-ranked Explorers were able to take out the success in the conclusion, squeaking by KSU 63-61 for the upset. Free throw firing was the difference in that one, as K-State went just 9-17 from the charity stripe while La Salle shot 14-16 to take the glory. Both groups had similar field goal shooting, rebounding, and return numbers, but the difference at the line proved to be the determining factor. Leading the way for the Explorers was Jerelle Wright with 21 points on 6-6 shooting from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. Kansas State light emitting diode by Jordan Henriquez and Shane Southwell, each with 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Title triumph is wanted by van Persie - ESPN.co.uk

Robin van Persie has unveiled his goal was to win three awards in his first period with Manchester United, but will settle for winning the Premier League title absent to Arsenal the following month. Van Persie moved to Old Trafford from the Gunners in a A24 million transfer last summer, and has been required to adjust his ambitions since United were bundled out of the Champions League by Real Madrid over two legs early in the day this month. The striker has become hopeful the group leaders can seal the domestic concept once they play Manchester City on April 8, or at Arsenal three months later. "My purpose was to win the treble," Van Persie is quoted as stating in the Daily Mirror. "I wanted the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup. "Now we only have the double and, yes, I do believe we could get the name at Arsenal if not against Manchester City. But I truly do not care where we get it. I just desire to get that league title." A target for United during his times in the Eredivisie in his homeland, Van Persie says he's now at an age when he can appreciate being at among the Premier League's greatest clubs. "[Manchester United manager] Sir Alex Ferguson once sent a search over to Holland to view me when I was a new person at Feyenoord. But I was sent off that the hunt and day returned to England with that in his report. "Sir Alex stated that if you ask me when I arrived at United. He thought I wasn't yet ready for a proceed to a big English team all those years back - and he was right. I said to the manager 'you were right then, but I'm ready now'," he explained.
