JT shot himself in the foot – now Chelsea might get shot of him | The ...

His refusal to shake David Bernstein's hand at the Champions League trophy handing-over ceremony in London will not have gone down well with the Chelsea top brass.

Terry's diplomatic gaffe — little more than bloody-mindedness — stems from his belief the FA rushed him into announcing his England retirement after failing to support him over the Anton Ferdinand race row. Though he was cleared at Westminster Magistrates Court of a racially aggravated public order offence, the FA banned him for four games and fined him £220,000.

What will have particularly irked the Chelsea skipper is the FA's description of his defence as 'improbable, implausible and contrived'.

By singling out Bernstein, saying the FA chairman had 'spoken about him at the court case', Terry has got the wrong man.

The fact his blanking of Bernstein came at an official UEFA function attended by the body's president Michel Platini will have embarrassed Chelsea.

The club, under orders from Roman Abramovich, are in the middle of a clearing-out operation of senior players that saw Didier Drogba leave at the end of last season.

Rafa Benitez continues to not play him in bigger matches. The former Liverpool boss faces an emotional return to Anfield tomorrow where he said he would be guided by common sense.

"I have to be professional, put aside any emotions and just concentrate on three points and what is good for Chelsea."

Should Chelsea follow up an interest in Borussia Dortmund's 24-year-old central defender Neven Subotic, they might well deem one of the most famous players in the club's history already surplus to requirements The events in Whitehall yesterday will not have helped his cause.
