West Brom boss in call over Gareth McAuley contract talks - expressandstar.com

Boss Steve Clarke today urged West Bromwich Albion to give Gareth McAuley "the contract he deserves" as talks over a new deal threatened to stall.

McAuley, who is favourite to be crowned Baggies player of the season on Sunday, is in negotiations over an extension to his current deal, which is due to expire in 14 months.

But the discussions have yet to reach a conclusion with the veteran Northern Ireland international understood to be unhappy with the terms offered so far.

Clarke refused to give details of the talks but admitted he wants them resolved as quickly as possible. "I would like to think it will be sorted," said Clarke. "He has been our best player this season consistently.

"I am sure he will pick up all the player-of-the-year awards and I would like to think Gareth will stay with Albion.

"I want him to get the deal he deserves and I would like it put to bed as soon as possible but it is not my department so I have to leave that to other people."

McAuley is under contract for next season along with Youssouf Mulumbu and Shane Long, who are also in talks over extensions.

Long's representatives have met with Baggies sporting and technical director Richard Garlick but the parties are still thought to be some way apart.

Meanwhile, Clarke still believes Albion are in pole position to land Romelu Lukaku again next season if Chelsea allow the 19-year-old to leave on loan – but the Scot admits he must have contingency plans for if the striker does not return.

"I would love him to stay here but we have to plan for life without him," said Clarke. "All I would say is, if he comes out again on loan I think we're in a good position to get him again."

Albion captain Chris Brunt is out of tomorrow's trip to Southampton with a knee problem that Clarke fears could keep him out for more than one game.
