Brent Grimes, Elvis Dumervil and Darrius Heyward-Bey are three of the NFL's top free agents left on the market after a week of action. All three players have been receiving interest this past week but have yet to be signed.
Teams with money and dreams of improvement made big splashes, landing big-name players. But there is still plenty of talent left for the taking, and the next couple of weeks will be when many of the best deals will be struck by savvy general managers.
The cornerback market has been frustratingly stingy for the top players in this year's free-agent class. Grimes, who is coming off an Achilles injury that kept him out of most of last year, is feeling the sting more than most.
Grimes recently visited with the Cleveland Browns, and he apparently enjoyed the visit, per the Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot:
"Brent enjoyed spending time with the head coach and defensive coordinator," the source said. "He came away impressed with their overall plan for the 2013 season and beyond."
Before getting injured, the Pro-Bowl corner was fast becoming one of the NFL's top players at his position. He will be a tremendous bargain if he can return fully healthy and play at the same high level he did before his unfortunate injury.
The zone-coverage specialist would be a perfect fit for Ray Horton's zone-blitz scheme. If he ends up signing with Cleveland, he'd challenge for a starting spot playing opposite Joe Haden.
After losing Paul Kruger to the Indianapolis Colts, the Baltimore Ravens are reportedly pursuing Dumervil, per the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Ross.
Dumervil was released by the Denver Broncos after his agent reportedly didn't get a fax sent in time. He's been a highly productive pass-rusher for Denver the past handful of years, logging 63.5 sacks and 16 forced fumbles over his six-year career.
Also, the Denver Post's Mike Klis recently wrote that a source informed him that the Ravens are currently negotiating with Dumervil.
Dumervil would be a devastating pass-rusher opposite Terrell Suggs in the Ravens' 3-4 scheme. He's been a 4-3 defensive end his entire career, but his agility and quickness make him a perfect candidate as an outside linebacker for the Ravens.
A week after the Oakland Raiders released Heyward-Bey, it looks like the former No. 7 overall pick is being considered by the New York Jets, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
The receiver was set to earn $7.7 million in 2013 (h/t Rotoworld, via PFF), and the Raiders couldn't justify paying him that kind of money, given his lack of production.
Heyward-Bey looked to be ready to break out after a 2011 season that saw him catch 64 passes for 975 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to match that production in 2012, catching just 41 passes for 606 yards and five touchdowns.
That said, he's still a talented young man with undeniable speed. If he can get back to the form we saw in 2011 at a reasonable price, he'll be a bargain for the Jets.
