Other lots will be on sale at the auction including a framed illuminated manuscript presented to Sir Stan by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

It includes a eulogy which reads: "By your amazing football ability you have rendered magnificent service to your city by placing it in the forefront not only nationally but internationally.

Clive Hillier, head auctioneer at Louis Taylor Fine Art, said: "Both these pieces are one-offs. They truly are one of a kind and we are expecting them to attract a lot of interest.

"The silver tea and coffee set has a nice inscription and was given to Sir Stan after his 44th appearance following the England v Belgium match on January 19, 1946.

"The manuscript is another nice piece. It is in watercolour and calligraphy writing. It was made specifically for Sir Stan himself.

"We are expecting there to be a lot of interest from people who specifically collect items associated with Sir Stanley Matthews and we hope they will be snapped up by somebody local."

A Peggy Davies Ceramics-produced Sir Stanley Matthews Charger will also be up for grabs. The pottery firm designed the item to commemorate the life of Sir Stan.

Nigel Johnson, of the Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation, said: "It would be nice to see the items remain in the city because of the relevance Sir Stan had to Stoke-on-Trent. But either way, I hope whoever does manage to secure them, that they treat them with the respect they deserve."
